2016 – L’Uomo, la Bestia e la Virtù

By Luigi Pirandello

May 29th – 7pm in the Palmerston Room at St John’s College

“Everyone wears a mask. Not a literal one, maybe, but a mask nonetheless: everyone plays a role in the comedy of life. Professor Paolino, the Man, hides an illicit love affair under his respectable demeanour. Mrs Perella, his lover, wears the mask of Virtue but is not really virtuous at all; while her husband, Captain Perella, the Beast, seems oblivious to it all. But chance and destiny rarely leave well enough alone, and a series of unexpected events will radically change the dynamics of the group. The result is a hilarious and poignant comedy, a brilliant satire of the hypocrisy of burgeois “respectability”, in the unmistakable style of Luigi Pirandello.”

The Italian Society Theatre Group returns to the stage in 2016 with a brilliant comedy by Pirandello, ‘L’Uomo, le Bestia e la Virtú’ (‘Man, Beast and Virtue’, 1919). The Latin Professor Paolino (Michelangelo Chini) must face a complicated situation: his lover Mrs Perella (Ester Cannizzaro), married to a Captain (Joned Sarwar) who neglects her, abstaining from every relation and indulging in extramarital affairs, is pregnant. A series of schemes gone wrong, misunderstandings and unfortunate events drag the protagonists and the audience into a crescendo of comedy and tension until the paradoxical climax of the play.

In their first theatrical experience, Michelango Chini and Ester Cannizzaro gave brilliant proof of their talent, together with Joned Sarwar, perfect in the role of the braggart captain. The rest of the cast each brought a personal touch of comedy to Paolino’s drama. Luovico Nolfi crafted his directing around the idea of the secret (represented by the gift of flowers to members of the audience), and especially took advantage of the comic charge within the text, unusually cheery for Pirandello and with few shadows. The show, which was quickly sold out, was a great success with the audience and critics, and was enthusiastically reviewed by Professor Julie Dashwood in the magazine Pirandello Studies.
