ABOUT THE SHOW

The Cambridge University Italian Society is proud to host two performances of the Italian traditional fairy tale “La favola de Zoza”, adapted from “Lo cunto de li cunti” by Giambattista Basile (1634) on the 28th and 29th of June at King’s College and Newnham College.

This performance is a free adaptation of the original text, presented as a monologue by Paolo Panaro, an accomplished Italian actor and the artistic director of Compagnia Diaghilev, who already performed in Cambridge twice, each time with a tremendous success.

The performance will be followed by a Q&A session with the actor.

SYNOPSIS

Zoza, daughter of the king of Vallepelosa (hairy valley), never smiles. Her father had, by all means, tried to cure her of her melancholy. All was in vain. He then tried one last trick: he builds, in front of his palace, a fountain that splashes oil on passers-by. An old woman attempts to fill a jar with the oil, but a pageboy throws a stone and smashes her oil jar. The old woman, furious, lifts her skirt and shows off her secret garden. Zoza, who from a window has been spying on that spectacle, indulges in an irrepressible laughter. The old woman, resentful, curses her, and the marvelous theatrical machine sets off.
